Multifaceted Awards

Right. I'll follow [livejournal.com profile] aerynstales's example and pimp my own Multifaceted nomination :-). Voting for the Awards is now open, so if you feel like wasting a vote on my As She Likes It (for the really innocent readers among you, it's R-rated and SS/OFC) in the Endurance category for challenge entries, then please be my guest and go here. I'll never know if you don't, and I won't win anyway, but if you haven't done your good deed for today, you might consider this ;-).

I have just got my very own computer since Sunday, and moving all my files I started to dip into my fics again. The number of unfinished stories on my hard drive is depressing ;-). Anyway - I have come to think that Mirror Mirror is really one of the best things I ever wrote; but I suppose that now that HBP overtook it, it is doomed to oblivion. Too bad.

If anyone here is interested in letting me know their opinion, I'd love to hear which of my stories (or art, if you like that better) you liked best, and why... Just curiosity :-).

Voting duty done!

I always quite liked "Professor Snape's Address", as a good pre-emptive shot at a sixth year fic until it was also can(n)oned by HBP. :-(

Thank you! ♥

"Snape's Address" really did strike a cord, somehow... Wherever I post, it's always the most read and most reviewed story. It was also a horror to write :P. I just came across an earlier draft with that silly ending:

_________________________
“It might have its advantages to do something radically different,” Daphne admitted. “For one, it would provide us with the perfect opportunity to kick Malfoy’s arrogant butt.”
“Yeah,” Adrian agreed. “If we are lucky we might even expel him from the Quidditch team. He’s definitely the lousiest Seeker we’ve had in years, don’t you agree, sir?”
“I cannot deny it.”
“We could take Graham instead, or Dot.”
“We could finally beat Potter.”
“We could win the Quidditch Cup.”
“Why not the House Cup too, while we’re at it?”
“You could become Headmaster, sir!”
“Yes, if you don’t snuff it at the Dark Lord’s hands, that is.”
“Why, thank you, Mr Zabini.”
“You’re welcome, sir.”
“Now I suggest you all go to bed. It is late.”
“Oh, must we, Professor? I was just beginning to enjoy myself. We could make it cosy here.”
“We could have hot chocolate.”
“And cushions.”
“And a fire.”
“Never! Get out.”
“But-”
“Now!”
“… - Yes sir.”
The Slytherins picked themselves up seconds before their Head of House Vanished the chairs on which they had been sitting. They might have forged a pact, but that did not mean he had become any nicer. And so the newly formed Slytherin’s Army retreated to its common room – in stealth and order, as Slytherins must.
______________________________

I did update it to fit HBP, actually. It didn't need that much - unless of course you are not willing to believe that HBP-Snape would have given that kind of speech :-). For the rest, Slytherin's Army is so stealthy that Harry just didn't notice it was there XD...

Our sweet, innocent academic is pimping for votes? I never thought I'd see they day! *feigns shock*

I've already read your wonderful As She Likes It, so I shall cast my vote...

LOL! I'm going to feel bad about it, working on people's conscience to vote ;-)... But I do know that some have whole Yahoo groups and armies of SS/HG shippers behind them, so I thought that if I just asked my flist I was actually very modest :D.

Thanks for the vote!

Well, you know what my favorite picture of yours is (and I can't wait to get my greedy little hands on an original non-digital version!). :) My favorite story would have to be "The Good-Morrow." There's just such sweet fulfillment there.

[identity profile] sigune.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
*cough* I haven't forgotten about the picture, honest :-). The bad news is I still haven't done it; the good news is I've drawn Snape alone on a sofa and for once the sofa looks fine. That means there is hope :D.

"Intimacy" + "The Good-Morrow" = Lunafish is a real Snape/Bromley shipper... ;-) (Wheee!)

[identity profile] lunafish.livejournal.com 2006-02-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's me! We'll have to think of a catchy title for that ship so that I can add it to my Potions and Pineapples declaration on my LJ and other profiles!

[identity profile] sophierom.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I voted! ;-D

I'm a horrible flister, I know. I've only read two of your fics: As She Likes It and Dark Night of the Soul. I really enjoyed both of them ... that is, both of them made me feel as if Snape had come alive with all of his imperfections and issues. You are very skilled at understanding this character and making him human. It's quite easy to make him into cruel villain or misunderstood hero (I tend to read and write the latter). I will read more of your stories soon. I'll check out Mirror Mirror first.

Good luck with the Multifaceted Awards ... hope you win!

Thanks for the vote! I have no illusions about winning; the competition with WIKKT and Ashwinder and such is probably murder :-). On the other hand, I still don't know who nominated me, so if I have a mystery admirer, maybe I have mystery voters too, LOL.

"The Dark Night" and "As She Likes It" both have a very self-centered Snape, I think - I mean, I always write him as self-centered, but these two are almost cocoonish. This is the limit to my fanficcing: it's really Snape-Snape-Snape and his perspective on the Potterverse that fascinates me. I don't seem to be able to do anyone else's. "Mirror Mirror" is one of I think two stories in all that are written from another character's perspective; that's probably one of the reasons why it feels so special to me when I go back to it :-).

I've read 'as she likes it' a while ago. I'll go vote for it. I haven't read most of your fics because the summaries tell me that they deal with stuff I want to write about, too, so I don't read, for now. But I really, really admire how you write. And it's not your native tongue, is it?
You know already how much I like your art.

[identity profile] sigune.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I know the problem. When I'm writing something, I don't want to be influenced by someone else's take on things.

No, English is not my native tongue; but though it means I need a native speaker beta (the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] todayiamadaisy)to point out real mistakes or things that sound plain odd, I think it also has its advantages. Sometimes I consciously use literal translations of Flemish expressions that in English look like unusual imagery :D. Maybe not being a native speaker makes it more inviting to play with language? I have great fun with it anyway. Before I started to write fanfic, I didn't realise how great the difference between academic English and story-English is; I needed a whole new vocabulary! What's your experience with this?

Thanks for the vote!

--Before I started to write fanfic, I didn't realise how great the difference between academic English and story-English is; I needed a whole new vocabulary! --

Indeed! Same here. And I find it very difficult. I have those scenes in my head and lack the vocabulary for them. LOL. Dictionaries have become my best friends. But it does improve my English, I hope. Especially my written English. Other than with casual posts, with fanfic I have to pay attention since the archives I use are strict and I don't want to cause too much trouble to my betas. And I so suck at punctuation.
I'm quite good with my own language and it bugs me that I'm not as good with English. LOL.

[identity profile] aerynstales.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well consider your story voted for...though *leans closer* I think this is one of the few of yours I haven't read but I figured since I really liked the others, why not! Is that bad of me? *sigh*

I laughed when I saw my name up on your entry...because I really am a shameless pimp. But like you I don't think I'm going to win either. Too much Granger/Snape competition and too many stories that are likely better than my little ditty. Ah well, I just love the fact that someone liked it enough to nominate!

I think the story I like the best of yours is Professor Snape's Address...and for picture...ah, well, I know I've mentioned this before...The Young Potion's Master, because he looks just like how I see him at that age in my mind...down to those robes *covets robes*.

[identity profile] penguin2006.livejournal.com 2006-02-24 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hello Sigune.... it's Penguin2006 from DeviantArt. Well, it's so hard to believe that English isn't your first language. My Dutch husband has been in the UK for 6 years and he doesn't speak as fluid English as you yet... come to think of it, I don't either and it's my first language! I've just read one of your stories, The Good-Morrow, and I loved it. Very different from any other fanfic I have read so far, very immediate and crystalline. I registered here yesterday so I could post comments on your journal....

Is there one place where I can read all your stories? You seem to have posted them in quite a few places and I need to log on to the sites for the rated ones. I don't want to have to register to a whole lot of different sites, so which one would you recommend?

I was interested in some of the replies to your mini-essay about Snape and his connection with Harry. One person commented about what a vile, cowardly character he really is. It's true! You've mentioned it yourself - if we met him in real life, we would want to definitely stay at a distance from this unpleasant man. One of the least attractive things about him is that he is an adult man who gets off on bullying little children. It's just pathetic. Not to speak of his downright evil past. Yet we are all so fascinated by him. I blame JKR for writing him with such obvious enjoyment. She has admitted that he is a detestable character but she loves to write him because he is such fun, and it really shows. Perhaps we have all been drawn into this passion she has for the writing itself? All I know is that I am slightly obsessed.

I'm off to read more of your stories now, starting with the ones mentioned above...

Oh, and by the way, if anyone wants something checked for British usage, you can send it to me because I'm always seeing mistakes of that sort in fanfic (but I'm not a writer so I couldn't betaread). You can pass that on if you want. (Not in yours Sigune, The Good-Morrow was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.)

Hello Penguin, welcome to my journal! I'll have to alert my friend [livejournal.com profile] _vocalion_ to your icon - her ship is Potions & Pineapples :-)...

Wheee! you like my writing too! That makes my day. As for my English, you haven't heard me yet; writing does come easier to me than speaking, and for my stories I have a wonderful beta.

'Slightly obsessed' doesn't cover my 'affair' with Snape in the slightest, I fear :D. After the stories I've written and the pictures I've drawn I'm not inclined to call him vile and evil; I adore him - though, as you say, I wouldn't want to meet him, LOL. As a fictional figure, and a fictional mask to use in writing, he is really great and exciting. I think that is what JKR means: when you write Snape, you know you are being base and mean, but it's wonderful to have a mouthpiece that allows you to discard the restrictions of who you are in real life. Mind you - I say 'wonderful', but I felt really bad after writing "As She Likes It". It has my nastiest Snape ever, and it was hard to come to terms with the fact that he came out of my head. Fortunately I'm very different from him in real life ;-).

My stories are indeed posted at several sites. Occlumency holds them all, without exception, and in the most recent versions - that would be here (http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/viewuser.php?uid=367). The only story you won't be able to access via this page is "As She Likes It", because of the R-rating. In case you really want to read that story, I'll have to redirect you to FictionAlley, here (http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/sigune/). That site holds all my stories (and my HBP Snape essay) as well, but the ones written before OotP haven't been updated. FA has all the original versions.

Thanks so much for the praise! *floats away on a pink cloud*

I just read 'As She Likes It'. Wheee! Snape was very vindictive and gloating towards Sirius - but it was all in his head. He didn't say anything. The venom was fantastic. It was actually very funny, reading someone being that sarcastic and malicious. You just didn't want to be on the receiving end of it!

I have registered on Occlumency, and I am working my way through all your stories now. Joy unconfined! I'm enjoying reviewing them too because I'm very opinionated.
